Solved: Hello, I have a TV Sony KDL-46Z4500. No unfortunately there is not a firmware update available for your Bravia KDL-46Z4500. 0 Kudos Reply.
Hey iroquois I was trying to create a post there @ dtvforum about this problem but was not able to insert new topic not sure.even though i am a member there too.i did read somewhere on that forum about sony's restriction in firmware for epg in oz.however since they offer firmware on the website I wonder what really prevents you running an american firmware that has no restrictions on epg.just a thought.i also think that firmware is not hard to install however i am scared doing it. I have a bravia 2years old, ever since new has lost sound requiring turn off turn on again, reported to Harvey Ns and told dont worry its local Bundaberg shithouse tv signal anyhow your covered by extended warranty.
Not so lately now loosing channels which requires total re-scan, contact extended warranty people and told its a software problem so not covered by warranty, contact Sony, yes some of the Bravias have a software problem or fault from new, where do I go from here? Well office of fair trading unless the warranty people or Sony come to the party.as my claim is the set was faulty from new. For all those wondering if you can use foreign firmware I tried using firmware from the Sony UK site (on my KDL40Z5500) and. No, it won't let you update it, says 'no applicable update data exists'. Or something of the sort, can't remember the exact wording. There only seems to be one way to get your firmware updated, and that's if there's a legitimate problem with it and you can convince Sony Support to send someone out to update it.
I know this because the Zs, maybe just the 5500s, have massive input lag (tested it at 81ms in 'general', or 60ms in 'game' mode, was 6ms on my old KDL32V4000) if you get firmware before 1.5xx, and over the course of 6 hours I was finally able to convince them it was a firmware issue. Got a guy coming around to update it later this week. Should be fun. Support guy also said there was pretty much no way in the near future that any of us normies will get a hold of the firmware, or any firmware that will work. Well for everyone but me, 'cause I get new firmware.
If you kick up enough of a stink about it (or maybe even say you have some problems that the new firmware should fix even if you don't, although I didn't say that) they might send someone out to update it if you're still under warranty. Or even contact one of the Sony Authorized Repairers on the Sony site, they might do it although I guess if they did it'll cost you.
That's who is going to be updating my FW. Today I had a technician from the ICF extended warranty come to have a look at a backlight issue. It something i should have done a loong time ago since i first bought the TV as I noticed the backlight was quite uneven. But anyways, the guy came today and offered to change the panel.
I took the chance to ask him for a formware update and he said it can only be done at their shop. So he took the TV in.
I'm just wondering, it might make much better sense for the warranty company to buy a new TV than replacing the panel. Why do they do this?
I know this because the Zs, maybe just the 5500s, have massive input lag (tested it at 81ms in 'general', or 60ms in 'game' mode, was 6ms on my old KDL32V4000) if you get firmware before 1.5xx I picked up a 40Z5500 from HN and to my horror was a June 09 build hence has 1.408AA F/W. It also has a dicky pixel that is dead and massages on/off so I might see if they will swap it over for a fresh stock. Never thought about this when I bought it, just thought these things were like hot cakes. So are you saying the input lag is shortened with a later firmware upgrade?
So how does the PS3 Games perform if this set has such a big delay – terribly poor I imagine. Mahoneyxtra writes.
No need to change it, since my Oct build 46Z still uses the same Firmware, anyway, there is no way you could update the Bravia Firmware's in Australia. Thanks for the heads up on f/w.
Another thing I notice is there is no Freeview sticker on the set or box, unlike my Sharp that has it on the box printing. From what Sony says the 2009 Z5500 series offers this but all I want to know is if it is MPEG4 which is Freeview. Looks like I should have bought from JB as HN had stock from when these sets were realeased in July 1.
Seem the 46in sell more in the Z range than the 40 which probably sell more ECO or W series. Still worried about the dud pixel so I will see if they will swap it. Is the improvement in lag just a rumour or is their more proof than 1 post? The Tv has the feature to upgrade. Why not let us upgrade I called SONY about it and their official response was 'there is generally no need to release newer firmware's' however the Sony Rep have told me to check on their Website Sony Support periodically to see whether newer firmware's is available. He also states that Bravia Firmwares are usually updated via the SONY Support website a couple times per year.
Anyway hope this clarify the situation a little bit. I picked up a 40Z5500 from HN and to my horror was a June 09 build hence has 1.408AA F/W.
I'm in the same boat. Now I want the newer firmware.
However the Sony Rep have told me to check on their Website Sony Support periodically to see whether newer firmware's is available. He also states that Bravia Firmwares are usually updated via the SONY Support website a couple times per year. Sounds like a blow-off answer to me.
I seriously doubt they'll release a firmware update on their site: My TV also didn;t come with a freeview sticker. I assume there's no actual difference between the freeview branded sets?? Does the newer firmware 'do' anything different like have full EPG?

AFAIK, I didn't think the firmware's has anything to do with rectifying EPG issues (If there was any). However, the rumours been flying around in the last week from AVForum UK has stated that newer firmwares will effectively reduce Input Lag for the Z series more specifically, again this is not validated nor there have been enough evidence to support this claim. Having said that, Newer firmware's are meant to deliver more updates, stability, addressing performance issues. I thought I would let you guys know Leighroy got rid of the bravia. (I'm his brother, and I know he never follows things up.) After dealing with sony and the guy they sent around who knew nothing about why we called, insisted there were and never have been any firmware updates for sony tv's with all his 'special sony privileges' he insisted he had (which I proved him wrong in 30 seconds). Not to mention he showed up and didn't introduce himself by name or company.
So at the end of it we said the big F U to sony (not in those words but you get the point) took the tv back and got a sharp led 40lb700x(lag dropped to 20ms on game mode) which I must say handles real world motion a lot better but we just haven't go the whites right yet. At the end of this the only good thing I can say is the peeps at JB-HI Fi do their job damn well and are very helpful. To answer your question 'Mahoneyxtra.' , there are posts on us/uk forums that say the lag was fixed with new firmware 1.5+(also 1.6). Games were unplayable due to mouse lag (fps especially) and the only playable game was rockband because of the setup (which drove me mad for a week.), movies and shows were beautiful but at a price:/ Great tv but I'd think twice and ask alot of questions and test it in store before I buy any tv again. I encourage people to email Sony with comments on the lack of firmware support. The more feedback, the better.
I am extremely disappointed that Sony are not providing a firmware upgrade for the Sony Z series LCD televisions. There has been an updated firmware in the UK for a long while, and it fixes may of the motion problems I and many other Aussie owners are experiencing. Please consider releasing an update for the Australian market – we already pay a premium for the products, and yet we still get shafted by the lack of support. Please advise if there are any plans to released an upgrade of the firmware any time soon. Hi Guys, Just thought I would post the response I got. I am very happy with this t.v and really don't have any complaints at all, think it is superb.
Just thought I would query the motion flow and gadgets we didn't get here in Australia. More curious then anything. Thank you for your enquiry. Typically BRAVIA Firmware Updates are actually issued by Authorised Service Centres if there are any available for a product.
There is no information on a Firmware Update for this unit. When researching products Sony Australia recommends only referring to Australian literature as overseas models often bare no resemblence in features to those offered by Sony Australia. Furthermore, if firmware updates are available, they are usually not 'Feature Adding' updates, but simply improve properties that have proven to be problematic. Motionflow set on high is not a recommended setting for all applications. It has it's uses such as Sport and Gaming, however it is recommended to use standard or off in most cases. If it seems like an issue you should contact our support line on 1300 137 669 for troubleshooting. Thank you for choosing Sony.
Sony reply to complaining about no firmware updates: Thank you for your enquiry. Currently, there is no firmware update available for the Z series in Australia. We highly recommend you do not install the UK released firmware that you mentioned as this may harm your TV. If you have any further questions, we recommend that you contact our Customer Infoline on 13 (Mon – Fri 8am-6pm. EST), with your CASE #xxxxxx.
This service is designed for certain types of enquiries that can be resolved more effectively and efficiently in conversation with one of our trained specialists. Thank you for choosing Sony. Sometimes Sony really shits me.
Firmware Update On Lg Phone
I've got a KDL40W3100. The TV itself is fine, but the interface is just so horrible. The favourites preset lists (2 separate lists limited to only 6 channels each) are just terrible and so basic. Is there a way to hide channels you don't want? For example Channels like ABC have multiple channels which just have the same thing on. Apart from memorizing the channel numbers or using their crappy favourites lists is there a way to just remove those 'extra' channels like you could on TV's 20 years ago. While the viewing experience has been awesome, the interface, lack of an EPG have completely turned me off ever buying a Sony product again.
Just read a thread on the Z5500 on AV forums. Someone spoke with Sony and the Repair Center for them, advised that its Sony Australia's policy not to release firmware updates. Check post 214 and below. Ive got a replacement tv coming in the form of a Z5500 46inch replacing a X3100XBR that has been nothing but trouble, ill be questioning Sony when they call me. If they don't release fixes for TV's just cause its in Australia ill be asking for my money back. If the rest of the world gets fixes why not us.
Why for PS3 and Blu-Rays Players but not TVs! There is a firmware update version PKG1.428AA available in the Sony Australia site. You can find it if you browse your TV model under the Support tab (Downloads).
It says: Applicable Models: KDL-32W5500, KDL-40V5500, KDL-46Z5500, KDL-40Z5500, KDL-22S5700, KDL-46WE5, KDL-52Z5500, KDL-46W5500, KDL-40W5500, KDL-32V5500, KDL-40WE5 About this upgrade: This file updates all previous firmware versions to version PKG1.428AA, and provides the following benefits: Improvements in this version:. This software resolves the following symptom – TV set restarts several times, and eventually shuts down with the /support/attachments/370006/sbin.PNG(Stand by) indicator flashing ten times.
I've got no issues with mine (so far) and it seems this update only fixes a problem with the TV turning off. Until there is a major improvement of some sort (or if someone can confirm there is) I think i'll leave it for the moment. I hope that this indicates that Sony AU have altered their stance on firmware updates, I'd like to see the 1.6 firmware released (if it does truly help with input lag.) I would have thought if they were going to offer that they would have incorporated this fix with it.
Yep, I got the update last night also. I must say I'm not too impressed with how it works – as soon as you choose to apply the update, the set turns off and the update is applied in the off state with only the leds indicating that the update is in progress.
Well lately, with all these thunderstorms around we've been turning the TV off at the powerpoint (and unplugging it) overnight and when storms are approaching. I'm just glad it was me turning it off last night and not one of the kids – who would not have understood the importance of not turning it off at the powerpoint! The result could easily have been a dead TV. I know there's a little warning message, but that's not enough imo. I'm turning this feature off – better to use a USB and be sure that I control the process. Oh man, just got my TV firmware update over the airwaves. This was really weirding me out.
I didn't realize (like others) that there is bandwidth for software updates. I'd love to know more about that. Does Sony buy their own piece of spectrum? It's a new level of cool in my book (despite some of the issues noted in this thread). I hope this stops the tv turning off and the audio cutting out. I always put it down to signal but our signal is always 100% full as we brought a nice Hills antenna designed for digital signals.
Hi there, Just thought I'll let u guys know of an anomaly that has occurred since the automatic FW update that took place about 1 week ago. Now, every time I switch the Sony kdl-40v5500 on, the TV reverts to an analogue channel by default. It no longer remembers the last channel that it was on prior to being switched off. (I never switch to analogue.) (As for the TV switching off automatically, which the new FW was supposed to cure, I never had it in the first place.) Anyone having the same symptoms? I just got prompted for an over-the-air 'System update' to my 32W5500 and it freaked me out. What odds that I was half-playing with the remote control at that very second?
Didn't know if I'd pushed something to check for an update or not. It is three months since I purchased the unit. I was so excited to try the over-the-air cool factor I didn't check the previous firmware to see what I was going from and then to. Unfortunately my model is not listed on that open-source list which really sucks because I'm curious about hacking he firmware with a custom Linux distro. I must say it wasn't the smoothest of updates despite the freaky-cool (but risky) method of distributing through the DTV spectrum. A quick note on this: it really should not be hard because normal DTV pumps down megabytes of data in the TV signal all the time.
As updates would be unlikely to 'weigh' more than a GB, probably much lower, the 'download' should be really fast. If only we could use this spectrum for the interweb! Anyway the unit turned itself off, turned on the standby light and an orange light I've never seen on before. The manual says this is a 'Picture off/Timer' indicator. From there I was just supposed to guess when it was done and when I should turn it back on. I tried manually pressing the power button on the side of the unit but nothing happened.
Around a minute later the power button on the remote turned the unit back on. After I turned it back on there was an onscreen message stating 'The system has been updated' but to what firmware from what previous firmware revision and what has been updated is not detailed. Of course I can get into the System Information which tells me I now have firmware 1.428AA but that's it.
All the difference I've noticed so far is the channels have been either renamed or it's been told there are more channels available but of course these are regional channels (PRIME) and thus I can't tune them as I live in the city. I suspect re-scanning the channels will solve this but it's a bit weird. Amazing, mine updated by itself as well just as I was popping in FF13.
So anyone notice any difference so far? Mine updated last week. Was about to turn the set off when a message came on the screen with instructions saying there is an update available over the air. I selected to do the update after taking note of the instructions to leave the set alone during the update.
For this to happen you must have the update option ( for over the air updates ) turned on in the menu. Our KDL46Z5500 did not have the power off intermittent problem. So everything works as before apart from the version number which updated to the latest version number as quoted in this thread.
At work we have many 46' SONY Bravia 100 Hz TV's with Bravia engine 2. They all turn off now and again for no reason ( not too often ) and because we use them for important broadcast monitoring it is a bit of a pain when that happens. Of course we run them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – so we thought that was the reason for the occasional power turn off problem.
It is usually for a few seconds only.Otherwise even these older sets are nice but the Z series with motionflow 200Hz and Bravia engine 3 handles older material much better- such as VCR replays. HD pictures are excellent as well as Blue Ray disk material played on these TV's.
Be warned: DO NOT touch any remote buttons during the update. A few Led's blink on and off during the update. Then from memory the set turns off. When you turn it on again there will be a new software version number shown at that menu location.
Because we had no problem we could not see any difference after the update. The instructions say when the Led's stop flashing when it is finished. That's what I waited for and it was all OK after that.
I suppose we have to be grateful that they provide an update that way. I had a Panasonic set top box that had that facility but 9 years later and there is still no update available over free to air. I still use that STBox on our spare widescreen TV. Agree the process could be made a bit less stressful.
But the set is under a 3 year warranty so I thought if it fails – SONY will have to fix it for free. Agree the process could be made a bit less stressful.
But the set is under a 3 year warranty so I thought if it fails – SONY will have to fix it for free. Last night after finishing at the TV station I work at, I went home – had a glass of red and worked out the steps to allow our SONY TV set to be upgraded over the free to air service.
My previous posts have stated that this happened to me last week when I turned the TV off – a message came on the screen saying a firmware update was available. I followed the procedure & it installed successfully. Our SONY KDL46Z5500 TV didn't have the problem that this upgrade fixed but now it is installed anyway and our firmware version is PKG1.428aa For those that are unsure how to enable this to happen read what follows: 1) ensure your TV is on a digital channel like 1 or 7 etc.
To allow upgrade – when it's available 2) on remote push HOME button. 3) then push left arrow until you get to 'Settings'.
4) push down arrow until you get to 'Digital Setup'. 5) enter that menu item & ensure 'System Update' is set to on. 6) ( I would also recommend you set 'Auto-Update ' to on ) – same menu area. ( allows new logical channels to be picked up by TV ). 7) on same menu push down arrow to 'System Information' = firmware no. ( For SONY KDL46Z5500 it is 1.428aa for the latest version ( 18-3-2010 ) The System Update facility via a USB stick is in a different area. 1) push HOME, left arrow to 'Settings', then use up arrow until you reach 'System Update'.
It will ask you to insert a USB stick with the update software. ( I would recommend you place the file into the root folder or directory to make it easy for the TV to find it. Let it finish the job before you touch any other button on the remote or TV. About upgrades via USB sticks in general: I have done a software upgrade via USB stick on a Strong Set Top Box to fix an annoying problem and it works perfectly now, thanks to that manufacturer working out a fix & supplying it to the customers. Over the air' meaning 'via your LAN, right? Are any Z series getting this, or do we have to use the USB key option? Either way I'm a little worried about flashing my new TV!
No 'Over the free to air TV system' is just that the update arrives over the air waves not LAN or Internet just via the normal TV signal. That's why I said to have your tuner on a digital station. If your SONY TV model has a different menu setup – you may have things in a slightly different location. The naming conventions should be the same though. Remember if you turn that facility on in your menu, that this feature is provided by SONY and they would help if it goes wrong I'm sure. Just don't touch any buttons whilst the Led.' S are flashing on the front of your TV set.
Also if your TV is under warranty then SONY is obliged to fix it because it is part of the TV sets features. Follow the few basic instructions to the letter. Since it's a different model It may not even have the update using the free to air digital TV signal option on the menu. Have a look through yours. This update has nothing to do with the USB stick upgrade method.
Well my 40Z updated itself the other day – amazing stuff these OTA upgrades – I'm surprised TV upgrade softwares are being sent via digital TV signals – how long has this been happening? I had a Panasonic STBox from 2001 that was designed with that kind of updating in mind. It never happened with that early design Panasonic STBox but my late 2009 model SONY 46' Z series updated a few weeks ago. I can only guess that from now on more manufacturers will take advantage of that. I have also done some firmware updates to a STBox via a USB stick with great success and of course PC's have been updated in similar ways for years allowing manufacturers to improve a design after releasing it onto the market. Us consumers can only benefit for that – I'm glad to see it implemented. Remember these devices are sophisticated computers so this concept is not really mind boggling from that perspective.
I'm aware of the tech been able to do so for nearly a decade, but who regulates these OTA upgrades? I can only assume the ACMA do – but how limited/broad is it? Never read anything of it until just recently. OK – I have asked some people in the know.
Most TV Networks are being very careful about this due to Litigation possibilities. Apparently the ABC has been working on this with some manufacturers but until the manufacturers take full responsibility for any mishaps you won't see the majority of TV Networks rushing into this. The Manufacturers have to be prepared to send a Tech. To re-flash the firmware via USB or PC on site to fix any set updated that way before TV Networks would be willing to join this update method, that clearly works, but needs a bit more work on it to negate the Litigation angle. The mechanics are not that hard.
The data would be added to the multiplexed signal transport stream that is sent to the transmitter site. Any Network could do that now.
Last month, when I turned it on, it asked me if I want to upgrade the firmware and I selected 'yes' and it upgraded to the latest version. How is that possible that the TV can download firmware upgrade by itself? It is done over Free To Air, some TV channels are working with manufacturers to achieve this but not all FTA TV networks are participatiing at this time due to legal liabilities that need to be sorted out yet.
You must have that enabled in your system setup menu for it to do that. I enabled it in mine and had this done sucessfully recently – during Feb/March some time. One day soon this will be common practice. Panasonic are also at the forefront of this technology.
Hi, I just purchased the Sony KDL-46HX700 from JB Hi-Fi for $2350. It has been set up for Asia and Australia.
I don't like the AM/PM time display (prefer 24hr clock) and would like also the EPG function etc. I noticed on the Sony Europe website that they have a firmware update for my model as does the Sony Australia website. There is only a slight difference in the file names PKG1.104EUL-0103 and PKG1.104GAL-0103. I was thinking of using the taking the Europe version as I know that they do support 24hrs and EPG. The family also speaks German.
Has anyone attemped this before or attempted a firmware upgrade with firmware not taged Australia? Does any one thing that it could work? Xmas present from Sony for some. Applicable to KDL-32W5500, KDL-40V5500, KDL-40Z5500, KDL-46Z5500, KDL-22S5700, KDL-46WE5, KDL-52Z5500, KDL-46W5500, KDL-40W5500, KDL-32V5500, KDL-40WE5 Update of firmware to PKG1.429AA Available at Sony website. 'This update is to improve the decoding of daylight savings information transmitted in Australia. Before this update some Western Australian residents may experience the clock display indicating 1 hour ahead of the correct time, when viewing certain channels.'
Of course they could also have enabled Internet widgets as well – as the UK firmware does for these models. Instead they only provide 'fixes' and no enhancements.
The backlight seems to come out in blotches I have a 46' BRAVIA 3 LCD TV and can tell you that is not normal. Contact SONY on phone support line. I had an issue and they fixed it fairly quickly in our house and under warranty.
Very happy with our TV again. Digital Domain is the contractor for SONY in Adelaide & they did a perfect job replacing one of the circuit boards.
SONY TV's log a lot of faults which the Tech. If your fault is subtle they may just try a new board anyway. Make sure your settings are set for deep blacks in the advanced menu before you call them and see if the fault is still there.
Unfortunately my model is not listed on that open-source list which really sucks because I'm curious about hacking the firmware with a custom Linux distro. An open-source firmware project would solve so many problems – the most prominent being the Electronic Program Guide data loading. A similar project called exists for Samsung TVs like support for cheap generic USB wifi adapters, accessing shared folders over a network and general file support. As has been said, Sony also uses some but it seems nobody wants to examine the firmware releases/packing techniques, develop a alternate firmware and test it etc. Is it possible to repackage the European version to support the model sold in Australia?
We shouldn't put up with Sony Australia NEVER releasing important firmware updates that Europe/UK have had for YEARS. It's ridiculous.
Hi, I've bought a KDL-46Z4500 from a mate about a year ago, and all was well until last night. Left the TV on while I took the dog for a walk (I live alone), and when I got back I noticed that while it was still on, there was no picture on the telly, just a blank, black screen. I have tried everything, pressed all the buttons on the remote, read the manual, been on the roof and checked the antenna, nothing.
The TV is not picking-up or displaying any kind of digital signal what-so-ever. I tried changing to analogue too see what would happen, and initially I was able to get static fuzz to appear, but not now, only fuzz sound.
The TV 'Guide' button doesn't display anything. The 'Home' button causes 'Please wait' to appear momentarily, then nothing. The 'Input Select' button will flash up a list of inputs for a moment then disappear again. I don't really have any other devices to attempt to connect to the TV. The 'Options' button does appear to work as normal, though this effects the screen image, which is still completely black, no image. However, through 'Options' I can select 'Picture Mode', which will take me to a blue screen with further options. So, the TV can output more than just black.
I fear it's shat itself, but I'm not sure. It's from 2009, so well out of warranty, you would think. Can you get these things repaired? I found this link on AVForums: The problem seems similar, the TV was fixed by flashing the firmware. Does anyone know how to do this?
